What is Zipang?#
Zipang (also known as ジパング or 次元艦隊) is a gripping blend of science fiction, drama, and military history. The story follows a modern detachment of the Japan Defense Force that is unexpectedly transported back in time to 1942. Finding themselves in the middle of World War II, the JDF force faces a harrowing moral and political dilemma: should they use their superior modern technology to change the course of history, or remain neutral to avoid altering the future?
If you enjoy high-stakes historical “what-if” scenarios and military strategy, you can watch the anime on Prime Video.
Is the Zipang Anime Finished?#
When deciding whether to commit to the series, the biggest question is usually whether the anime provides a complete story. In the case of Zipang, the answer is complicated.
While the anime series aired from October 2004 to March 2005, the source material—the manga by Kaiji Kawaguchi—continued for several years, finally concluding in November 2009. Because the manga ran for four years after the anime ended, viewers who watch only the anime will likely find the story incomplete. To get the full, satisfying conclusion to the JDF’s journey in 1942, you will need to continue with the source material.
We highly recommend picking up the Zipang manga to see how the conflict truly resolves.
Who Should Watch Zipang?#
Zipang is best suited for audiences who appreciate:
- Military History: The series deeply explores WWII settings and naval warfare.
- Political Drama: Much of the tension comes from the internal and external debates regarding the ethics of time travel and historical interference.
- Hard Science Fiction: The premise focuses on the practical and strategic implications of modern technology meeting mid-century weaponry.
