Everything You Need to Know Before Committing to Ushio & Tora#
Welcome to “Is The Anime Finished?”, where we give you everything you need to know before you dive into a new series. Today, we are looking at Ushio & Tora, a high-energy blend of supernatural battles and comedic chaos.
What is Ushio & Tora About?#
The story follows Ushio Aotsuki, a middle-school student who discovers a hidden cellar in his family’s Shinto temple. Inside, he finds a dangerous yokai pinned down by the legendary Beast Spear for 500 years. This creature, whom Ushio names “Tora,” is a powerhouse of destruction who would love nothing more than to eat Ushio—if only he weren’t still restricted by the spear.
As other supernatural creatures are drawn to the temple, Ushio and Tora are forced into an uneasy alliance. While Tora waits for a chance to betray his human companion, the two must team up to fight off various foes. Looming over everything is the ultimate threat: Hakumen no Mono, an incredibly powerful yokai with a thirst for total destruction who is awakening from a long slumber.
If you’re looking to start this journey, you can watch the anime on Prime Video.
Is the Anime Really Finished?#
If you are worried about leaving a story hanging, you can breathe easy. The source material—the Ushio & Tora manga—was serialized from 1990 to 1996, meaning the original story is complete.
For those watching the more modern adaptation, the anime consists of a primary series starting in July 2015 and a sequel that followed in April 2016. Because the manga is finished, the narrative has a definitive end. Whether the anime provides a fully satisfying conclusion for every viewer often depends on their preference for adaptation, but the story itself does not leave you in limbo. If you want the full, original experience, you can buy the manga here.
