What is Sunny About?#
Sunny is a poignant slice-of-life story centered on the “Star Kids Home,” a residence for children with difficult circumstances. The story is seen through the eyes of Haruo, an unruly fifth-grader who describes the residents as kids who have been “dumped” by their parents.
Living alongside Haruo are several other children, including the harmonica-playing Junsuke and his toddler brother Shousuke, the studious Sei, the considerate Megumu, and teenage siblings Kenji and Asako. Under the care of Mr. Adachi and Miss Mitsuko in Mie Prefecture, these children navigate their lives amidst a backdrop of 70s Japanese pop, enka music, and professional sumo and wrestling matches.
The heart of their imagination is the “Sunny,” a junked Datsun car in the yard. This car serves as more than just scrap metal; it is a confessional, an imaginary spaceship, and a secret library. The series explores the subtle boundaries of these children’s lives, their pasts, and the dreams they hope to realize.
Appeal and Audience#
Sunny is best suited for audiences who appreciate character-driven dramas and subtle, atmospheric storytelling. It is not a fast-paced action series, but rather a study of childhood and resilience.
The quality of the storytelling is well-documented. The manga has received significant critical acclaim, winning the Shogakukan Manga Award and earning nominations for the Eisner Awards and the top prize at Angoulême.
With the upcoming animated adaptation being handled by Dwarf Studios and directed by Michael Arias (known for Tekkonkinkreet), fans can expect a visually unique experience using stop-motion animation. If you are a fan of experimental animation or high-art slice-of-life stories, this is a must-watch.
