Synopsis
Mononoke follows the enigmatic Medicine Seller as he travels feudal Japan, hunting malevolent spirits known as mononoke.
His method is unique: he cannot simply destroy these spirits. Instead, he must first uncover their Form, Truth, and Reason – essentially understanding their origins and motivations.
Only then can he wield the Exorcism Sword and confront them.
The story often places the Medicine Seller in situations where he must investigate a mononoke's presence before he is even equipped to fight it, requiring him to delve into the psyches of those affected and uncover hidden truths.
The initial case introduces Shino, a pregnant woman taking refuge in an inn, only to find it haunted by the Zashiki Warashi mononoke. The Medicine Seller must then embark on his perilous investigation to protect her and others from the impending danger.
