Synopsis
In the waning days of the Edo period, the Shinsengumi, a police force dedicated to the shogunate, suffers a devastating attack by a mysterious gang called the Masked Demons.
The sole survivor of one division, Heisuke Toudou, is tasked with rebuilding its ranks. He decides to recruit a group of seven convicts, offering them a chance at redemption by having them become replacements for fallen Shinsengumi captains.
However, these reformed criminals prove difficult to control, especially Ichibanboshi, who is driven by revenge against the Masked Demons for the loss of his family, and threatens the Shinsengumi's mission.
As Toudou struggles to unite this unruly group and protect the shogunate from imperialist factions and foreign invaders, other power players, such as Kogorou Katsura, begin to move in the shadows, each vying for control as the era comes to an end.
